Late Periods - December 26th 2011, 04:10 PM

The past two months my periods have been a week late. Well last month it was a week late, and now I'm still waiting for it 9 days later. Being pregnant is not possible, so I'm not that worried. Its just that I have always been on time, all my life until now. Ive been stressed out a lot, but I was wondering what can cause this, and if there are any ways I can get it to come (sounds weird, but I want it to make me feel better). If it doesnt come what should I do? How would I know when my next period should come? Any advice would be good. Thanks

If you stress, it can cause your period to be late.
My best advice is to clearly mark on a calendar your periods. When my periods started to get a little funky and late after two months, I went to the doctor and he said two months isn't that big of a deal, if its more than five to come see him. However, that was just me and if you feel like going to see a doctor, go. You said you cannot be pregnant, so if you have been sick or had a diet change your body might just be adjusting.

Stress is definitely a leading cause as to why your periods may be late. Think about what's stressing you out, and try to calm those things down so you aren't as stressed. Since you said pregnancy isn't an option, I'm not going to request you take a pregnancy test, but if it is any way possible you could be, I'd take a test to be sure. Just try to calm down, and not stress so much.

I'm assuming your period is usually regular? As others have said, stress can be a factor in causing late periods, but there could be other factors as well, like a changing diet (as Elizabeth said). If it really starts to bother you, see your doctor about it. As long as you're still getting it, I think you're fine though.

Just a funny story: a girl that works with my mom ended up having her period timing thrown off because of a new girl at work. Girls tend to have their periods around the same time as girls they see often. So this could be it as well.

Stress is definitely a factor in causing late periods. If it bothers you, it is best to see a doctor just to make sure.

I went to my doctor about my periods being a week or more late almost a week ago, and she said that sometimes girls do get their periods a bit early or late, and a week isn't necessarily something to worry about. If it is coupled with other symptoms, though (really bad cramps, nausea, etc) then they may put you on birth control (I might be going on it more for the cramping than the irregularity), but it is always possible that it is not needed. Like what was said before, check with your doctor if it keeps up or concerns you.

thank you for all the replies.
I guess it can be blamed on stress & some weight gain (university exam time and then christmas). Just wondering though, how would i know when to expect my next period so its not a surprise?? cuz normally i wear a pad a day before my period is set to come just incase. I know this sounds weird, but is there any way to get your period to come??

I don't think there is anyway, that I know of, to make your period come. It's just a case of waiting for it. I'd take pads with you, just to make sure that if it did come on when you were out that you are prepared and not completely taken by surprise.

There is no way to force your period to occur. It's something that happens naturally. I'm sure if we could force it, a lot of us wouldn't have it in the first place. Just carry some pads or tampons with you, and wear a panty liner until then.

If your thinking that it not coming may be caused by stress, than your probably right. There was a point last month where mine was almost a week late because of too much stress. Its really normal. Menstrual cycles have a mind of their own. If its really starting to bother you, go see a doctor, but I'm sure its just because your body is changing.
