Male gynaecologists -
January 8th 2012, 08:28 PM
Ummm... am I the only girl who doesn't find it weird?
I have a smear appointment soon and my doctor kept going on about it being a woman and not to worry. It wouldn't bother me :| He's a doctor. He obviously knows what he's doing so I don't see the big deal.I was having this debate with my sister earlier and she was saying she would find it really weird and uncomfortable. It's a bloody doctor :| gender doesn't matter. A male doctor would know what he's doing as much as a female doctor. I also found this video for the videos section but people in the comments are complaining he's male so I doubt I will use it now :/ He's still a doctor and knows what he's talking about :| ![]() |

At the end of the day they're there to do an examination on you. They don't care what gender you are. They've seen it all before and will see it many times to come!
I had a male doctor examining my breasts the other day and i've had a male doctor do a vaginal examination. Some people, it's a religious thing or they just feel more comfortable with a female. |

I always thought having a male doctor would be awkward, but truthfully, they're doctors. It's not like you'd be their first patient (unless of course, their new doctors, but then again, they'd have done practices before going out into the medical field).
I had my first male doctor last year, and honestly, male doctors are generally more sensitive for us than female doctors. |

Personally, I usually don't like male doctors, unless it's for something like a dentist or an eye doctor (my only male doctor IS my dentist.) I had to go for an ECG once and started crying when a man walked into the room, so they had to give me a woman.
But I know that a lot of people do prefer men, I know my mom does. It's all a matter of what would make the experience even slightly more comfortable.

I have a male gynecologist and I'm pretty sure I would feel just as uncomfortable if it was a female. You're showing someone your down below area and talking about possibly embarrassing issues. Male or female, you're probably going to be a bit uncomfortable either way.
Like others said, though, they're doctors. They went to school in the field and it's nothing they haven't seen or heard about before. |

I've had two gynecologists, the first one a young female woman, and the second one a middle aged man with kids, and somehow, I liked the man so much better.
He made me feel comfortable, he wasn't awkward, he didn't start drilling me when I told him I was having sex, and he didn't make me get a smear yet because he was happy about me using condoms. Like, my first lady, I wasn't sexually active yet but I was on the pill for my period, and she just drilled me because she didn't believe I was a virgin. I was very annoyed. I don't know, a doctor who actually believes what you say at 18 is pretty hard to find. Basically, I would give him a try. If he creeps, switch. But just because they're male doesn't mean they're terrible, they can often be better than a woman doctor!

I think that I prefer female doctors personally, because males in general tend to make me uncomfortable. I had a male doctor, who was always rude to me, and would make fun of me when I was sick. He also refused to prescribe me Birth Control when I have a genetic disorder that is treated with the hormones in birth control. I'm seeing a female doctor now, and she is so much better. But it's different for everyone, I guess.

My gynecologist is a woman. She was super patient and gentle with me for my first exam. The only two things I didn't appreciate was when she scolded me about my sexual partners and tried to push me to get the cervical cancer jab.
I got prescribed my birth control by a man though. He was super calm and nice and wasn't condescending in any way. |

I was talking about this very topic other day with my friend and personally I wouldn't care although I think for a gyno exam I think I would ask my b/f to come along just incase I did get a male doctor.

A doctor is a doctor. They all know the same stuff, regardless of gender. In the end it's what you prefer. For me it honestly depends on the manner of the doctor themselves and how they treat and care for patients, not on their gender.

This thread made me feel a little comforted ~ I have a gynaecology appointment soon with a male doctor which I wasn't sure how I felt about. But logically I mean, it shouldn't really matter. They're a doctor, they have the degree and the experience, it shouldn't matter either way!!

I'm more comfortable with men. Like, for anything. I had a female counselor and I was so uncomfortable and now I have male one and I'm much more comfortable. Same with doctors. Although I've never had any examine me down there yet so... I don't really know.

I have a male doctor and I've never been more comfortable. He listened to me and explained things really well to me when I didn't understand, moreso than the woman did. I used to think it would be awkward with a man looking at my private parts but that's his job. He's there to make sure everything looks okay and that everything is nice and healthy.

One thing I like to keep in mind is that the majority of gynecologists don't just give paps and do breast exams... they also deliver babies, help women with fertility when they are having trouble conceiving, help women choose birth control and help treat and prevent STDs.
I know a lot of woman have this image of male OBGYNs as guys who just look at vaginas all day, but that is just not the case. Its a profession full of men (and women) who care about the reproductive health of women and hope to ensure that the next generation those women are bringing into this world are healthy. My gynecologist did my paps and breast exams, then later he brought my son into this world and I have the utmost respect for him.
When reality is a prison, your mind can set you free. |
