shaving "down under" - January 8th 2012, 09:04 PM

I should start off by saying I don't have a boyfriend, I won't be having sex until marriage (thats the plan, anyway) and I have no reason for anyone to see me naked. I have never shaved "down there" but am seriously considering it. I did once but it grew back extremely 'prickly' and it was really uncomfortable.
Any ideas or tips?

I've done it before with the same not really having a reason to. To be honest I don't anymore because when it grows back it's extremely uncomfortable and it grows back kinda fast. Just my opinion though

Obviously, the hair is growing to grow back, and it's going to be prickly. Once you start shaving, the standard is to usually keep shaving, however, it will grow back quicker and thicker than what you'd normally expect, just like shaving your legs.

Some tips for you:
  • Use a shaving cream for sensitive skin. They usually have more aloe in them, or other nutrients to keep it smooth
  • Shave in the direction the hair is growing. This will help ensure that you won't get any nicks while shaving
  • Stay away from using things like Nair or any other hair removal systems. They won't be good for you, as Nair can actually cause burns
  • Don't be alarmed if you see little, red bumps on your pantyline area. It's just razor burn, and it's normal
  • Use warm water. This will help open the hair folicles, making it easier the hair to be removed
  • If you're quite hairy, use trimming scissors first to get rid of some of the excess hair. Then, use a new, clean razor to shave off the rest

That's about as much as I can think of. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I find that you don't need a fancy razor to shave, I use disposable ones. I find that if you shave in the direction the hair is growing, then shave in the opposite direction it feels smoother (but admittedly looks worse as there are more razor bumps.)

I agree with what everyone's said. Shaving to be completely smooth can take a long time and give you razor burn (unless you opt for waxing...ouch! ) Maybe just trimming? That prickly feeling can definitely be uncomfortable.

You really don't have to do it. If you don't like to...don't. First of all, men don't have a requirement about it anyway, so if you're doing it for a future husband, who cares? Men differ. My boyfriend doesn't care what I do down there, it's my area, and I don't care what he does either. I would do what is comfortable for you, and if you don't like it, don't do it.

My boyfriend doesnt care, but i definitely feel sexier and more comfortable when i am soft and smooth down there! There are cheap anti razor bump creams you can put on before you shave, then shave in the direction of the hair growth like previously mentioned, and you are silky smooth!
Good luck!

Re: shaving "down under" - January 18th 2012, 12:44 AM

Ive been with guys that prefer more hair, prefer it shaved, and some who dont care.
I prefer not shaving. Even though I do like the feel of it smooth, its really uncomfortable once it starts to grow back.
I compromise I have with myself is I shave around the lip area. And keep the little 'triangle zone' type thing (right below the belly button) fluffy. Since its only that area that irritates me when it goes back. Its what I like (:

Shaving tips:
-Have a good razor. Its usually more comfortable to use.
-use shaving cream, it helps oodles.
-also, maybe shave it in a hot shower.

hope this helps, C:

know exactly what you really want first, shaved, trim, or bushy got pros n cons. you did try before, n i guess you wish to do it again . . .

bald shaved looks cute, sweet, clean, n delicious ( IMHO ) n easier to wipe after a wee. the consequences is you have to keep maintain it at least every 2 or 3 days, otherwise it felt itchy n quiet distractive ( i usually pour menthol powder to help get rid the sensation )

trim looks tidy n cute too . . .

while normal bushy looks natural n little wild, me personally like the smell of bush whether after shower or sweaty after daily activity . . .

last but not least, bald n bushy result a little different taste too . . .

I found that it gets easier and less uncomfortable the more you do it and I personally prefer it wayyy more than the hair even though the upkeep is annoying as hell. But it's all a preferance.

... I don't know if a guys opinion is allowed? ... personally, i like it better when a girl shaves and it's soft down there... I do too ... I just think it looks better... I'd feel a little uncomfortable if I did and she didn't... but I'd never say it out loud though...

Shaving anything you like is fine, really, as long as you feel comfortable with it. Some people do miss the point that shaving isn't necessarily about having someone to impress; it's about keeping yourself groomed in a style you are happy with.

Unfortunately, the bikini region can be a little difficult to keep completely smooth for more than a few days, as the hair there is thicker and more coarse than anywhere on the body. If you are going to shave it and wish to keep it that way, it does take some commitment to maintenance (i.e. keeping the hair away from the prickly stage if it's uncomfortable for you). How often you shave really depends on you because everyone's hair grows at a different rate. I, for example, need to shave every two days, but I know some ladies that can go almost a week without shaving. It really just depends.

For the best possible shaving experience I recommend the following:

- Purchase and use a good razor. NOT the little disposable ones, but an actual razor that requires you to purchase blades separately. For starters, use a women's razor. I honestly prefer men's razors because I feel like they are sharper and sleeker, but that's just me.

- Change the razor blade every 2-4 uses, depending on how fast it gets dull. Even if you don't think it is dull, you should probably change it out anyway after 4 uses.

- Use shaving cream. It just works better than plain soap; it lathers more and gives you a softer feel.

- Shave in the direction the hair grows. In the bikini area, that's going to be down. Shaving against the grain can give you painful ingrown hairs, and trust me, that's a bad place to get them.

- Use lotion after you are done shaving. It soothes the area and moisturizes, too.

I don't think it grows thicker or coarse... to me that's a myth, I've shaved my legs for the basketball team, and even the swim team. If you shave, you have the possibility of getting split ends, making it look like 2 hairs instead of only one when it grows... but I seriously doubt a hair follicle would merely appear out of the blue between skin cells from shaving... or it may "appear" to grow thicker because you started shaving when hair started appearing and it didn't reach your full intended hair length...

I'm not talking about shaving one's legs, though; I'm talking about shaving public hair:

The genital area of males and females are first inhabited by shorter, lighter vellus hairs that are next to invisible and only begin to develop into darker, thicker pubic hair at puberty. At this time, the pituitary gland secretes gonadotropin hormones which trigger the production of testosterone in the ovaries, respectively testicles promoting pubic hair growth.

So while yes, not everyone's pubic hair is necessarily thick, it is thicker than that of other bodily hair due to its high response to testosterone levels. This also explains why men tend to have more of this thicker, coarser hair than women, seeing as they have higher testosterone levels (and why they have to shave more).
