Question Plan A...Plan B - December 11th 2010, 11:24 PM

I had sex about 3 weeks ago and we were responsible enough to use a condom... it was like the last day I had my period if that makes any difference....but we realized that the condom broke...about 3 hours after it happened....I rushed to the pharmacy to get Plan B within 6 hours of it happening and took plan B...about a week later I thought I got my period because I bleed for like 5 days and it felt like my period. So I thought I was safe....but now I'm getting some abdominal pain and everytime I lay on my stomach it hurts as if I had just done 1 hour of abs...can I still be pregnant? I'm just debating it because I've heard sometimes girls spot when they get pregnant and they think they have their period....

Well, emergency contraception is not 100% effective. So yes, it is possible that you could be pregnant. However, I don't think that you are. Some girls do spot when they are pregnant, but it wouldn't be five days of bleeding, it would just be a little bit.

Emergency contraception really messes with your system. The "period" that you had was most likely caused by the large amounts of hormones in emergency contraception. It's possible that the abdominal pain you are having now is just your regular period coming.

You could take a pregnancy test if you are really concerned, but you could also just wait a week or two and see if you have your period. Good luck!

My friend took plan B a couple months ago and she said that it messed up her system a bit; she said she had two "periods" that month.

Taking Plan B would mess up your system for a few weeks. It could cause some bleeding and abdominal pain. Chances are, the pill has worked for you, and you're just suffering with the backlash of taking it. It should sort itself out in a week or two.

Speak to your doctor if you're worried. Take care.

The plan b pill is a pill that keeps the egg from dropping. It is 90% effective in the first 24 hours, 80% effective within the first 48 hours and 70% effective within the first 72 hours. After that though, it is hard to say how effective it will be. It's not likely AT ALL to work after 3 weeks.

I would speak to a doctor. They can do a urine/blood test and tell you if you are. Remember you do have options.
If you can't see a doctor buy a pregnancy test. The dollar store tests DO still work. You can buy them at any age! (I am in California too). After 3 weeks you will be able to tell with a pregnancy test, if you are pregnant.
