Car Seat Safety NEW RECOMMENDATIONS! -
March 21st 2011, 11:52 PM
So yes, the carseat nerd is here.
I'm a Child Passenger Safety Technician. I got certified to help keep kids safer. I volunteer with my local SafeKids coalition, fire houses, paramedics, etc. Today was a wonderful day for CPSTs likes me. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) now recommend that you rearface your little one until age two. No more 1 year and 20lbs. Here's the video that talks about it: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/...20045337.shtml Here's a video about why rearfacing is 500% safer than forward facing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sssIsceKd6U In my car, I keep kids rearfacing until four years old or until they max out the seat. It probably sounds ridiculous, but it's so much safer, especially since I don't have top tethers. Top tethers reduce head excursion in a crash. 9 out 10 carseats are not installed correctly. Could yours be one of them? Simple reminders: 1. Remember to ALWAYS read your manual. 2. Your installed carseat should have no more than 1 inch of movement at the belt path. 3. There should be no twists in the harness, seatbelt, or LATCH. 4. The chest clip should always be at armpit level. 5. The harness should be snug as a hug. (You shouldn't be able to pinch the harness at the child's shoulders more than one inch 6.When rearfacing, the harness must be at or BELOW the shoulders. Forward facing is at or ABOVE. 7. If you cannot get your carseat installed properly, find a tech in your area. Feel free to PM me anytime with questions about anything carseat related. I'm always willing to help. The safety of your child is important to me! There is always hope. PM me anytime. SH Free since 10.20.08 |

Very informational. Children can get hurt if they are not property secured in a car. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

This is some good information and I honestly think it would benefit all parents to see it so I'm sticking and closing.
