Miscarriages - August 16th 2011, 05:02 PM

Hello,

A good friend of mine told me some news that is really surprising and I guess heart breaking for her. Hopefully I can explain this properly,

She told me that she went to the doctor about a week ago because she was having irregular periods and she didn't know why. Then the doctor asked if she was recovering from a miscarriage, of course she was stunned and yea she ended up telling me because I'm the only one she cab trust with it. she doesn't want her mum to know at all.

She also said that she was 15 at the time and now she is 16 nearer to 17.

I asked her whether she remembers having sex then and she said yes but the condom must have split. Now she is curious to whether its because she drinks the miscarriage came about.

I'd appreciate some help because I dunno how to help her and I feel like a bad friend because of it.

Thanks

Firstly, I don't know why her doctor would immediately think of a miscarriage...There are several reasons why she might have irregular bleeding. You cannot tell if you've miscarried unless you knew you were pregnant, or if you are currently miscarrying, which then you are made to take a test or an ultrasound.

Anyways, to your question:

Miscarriages are generally not caused by drinking. Usually with drinking, you may have a baby born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but depending on how far along she was it may have.

A few binge drinking here and there can be linked to FAS, but rarely a miscarriage. If she was far a long and drank at least 5 drinks a week for several weeks, then yes, it may have.

But do let her know what I said about miscarriages. He may have just been asking as pure interest. I miscarried and I had to CONVINCE my doctor. He basically would not say it happened because I didn't go until AFTER the fact, and I never had a positive pregnancy test.

Finally, he said "Yes, it was likely a miscarriage".

I hope the best for your friend.

I had the same feeling about what the doctor said actually, it doesn't seem right.

Thanks

Who knows, maybe she had more symptoms or the doctor did a pregnancy test I'm just going off the information provided. Either way, just let her know you support her.

Miscarriages usually don't occur due to drinking, as Kelly said. Many babies are born with fetal alcohol syndrome and are born either premature, or full-term. Depending on how much alcohol was consumed.

I experienced miscarriages because something was wrong with the fetuses. That's usually what happens and the fetus aborts itself because it can't go to term.

I hope I helped, at least a little
