Oestrogen - February 12th 2010, 09:15 PM

Apologies if you're sick to death of hearing from me at this point... This'll be the last topic I start on here for a while, I promise (:

I was talking to a friend last night, about hormones, (I'm transgendered and have an appointment with a gender therapist in a few days) and I'm starting to wonder just what the hormones actually change (if there's anyway of knowing) and me starting to get the usual cold feet I get just before any commitment...

Any words of advice and I'd be indebted to you (: ! Thanks x

I think the hormones will help you to develop breast tissue, loose facial hair, ect... I think... I would personally go on healthline.com, or other sites similiar to get an idea, and also check out kidshealth.org as they have much information on everything I hope all goes well for you Suzie

Hi Suzie,

Mostly, the hormones will redistribute your body fat. They wont change your voice unless your going F to M. As far as facial hair, each person is different, some peoples' hair stops growing and others dont.

If you're interested, there's this amazing simi series about transitioning called Trans Generation. It's available for watching instantly on Netflix if you have it.

GL with your appointment.

Tread very carefully if when taking hormones, the side effects can be deadly. I don't mean to scare you but strokes are far more common as a result of hormones than in "natural" situations. If you do decide to take hormones, make sure that you take them only the strong supervision of a licensed endocrinologist and neurologist or psychiatrist, not simply a gender therapist and an endocrinologist or a gender therapist alone. Also, make sure all hormones are legally prescribed and gotten, if you just follow those basics then there should be no problem.

Re: Oestrogen - February 14th 2010, 11:32 PM

I've just been researching this on the internet With Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) there are irreversible changes, and reversible changes when transitioning from Male to Female

Irreversible Changes
  • breast development,
  • enlarged nipples and areolae
  • stretch marks (for some)
Reversible Changes

  • decreased libido,
  • redistribution of body fat,
  • reduced muscle development,
  • various skin changes,
  • significantly reduced body hair
  • change in body odor and sweat production,
  • less prominence of veins,
  • ocular changes,
  • gonadal size
This is from wikipedia, just for the reference which is here. Basically the hormones will make you appear a lot more female for the most part (particularly with breast development, body odour and redistribution of body fat). There are also a lot of smaller changes, like the curvature of your eyes etc.

Good luck!

Hmmmm thank you guys! Maria, I'm going strictly by the book... everything's gonna legal... I'm not really one for putting substances into my body if I don't know where they've come from and how I've got them d:

Prescott, not sure what a simi series is but I'll check it out if I have time ^^ My appointment's on wednesday... kind of nervous about it xD

And Adam, thankyou for the list (: It puts things into perspective quite easily (Y)

I guess now I just need to start thinking about coming out to my dad d: x
