Question Coming Out To Family Member - December 27th 2011, 05:18 PM

I have recently turned bisexual and I am not comfortable telling anyone in my immediate family, including my parents. However, I do have an uncle who seems very open minded about things and I was considering coming out to him. I do not know how well he can keep a secret and I also do not know how he feels about the LGBT culture. The next time I see him, and am alone with him, how can I come out to him? I don't want to beat around the bush too much but I don't want to just blatantly say "I meant to tell you I'm bi". How do I go about telling a family member?

Thanks and advice is appreciated from everyone.

It probally would be best, If you bring up a friend who was Bi. It might help to see how they feel. Then you could say, I think I might be Bi. And explain why. Best of Luck!

Hey Patricia.

It's okay not to be comfortable telling your family at once. When I came out, it was to my sister first, then a gradually expanding circle. It's good that you have someone you feel you can open up to. If you stress the importance of keeping your orientation a secret, he should be understanding - but if you really have doubts, then it might be best to hold off for a while.

As the person above me said, if you're not sure how he'll react, you could try dropping something into the conversation about the LGBT scene. How he reacts to that could give you some clues about how he'd feel about your orientation. Or you can do a hypothetical, 'What would you do if someone you knew was bi?', although that's probably more direct. It depends on you, and on him, and on how open you want to be.

I hope things go well. Good luck.

I've never actually "come out" properly to my family. My relationship with my parents and sister is a little bit strange so my "coming out" story is a little bit different I just started saying things like "wow, Lauren looks hot on Eastenders today" My mum would raise her eyebrow the first few times but now she's cool with it. That probably isn't the best way to do it with most people though

I agree with Chess. Maybe try and drop in the odd comment and see how he reacts. If he seems cool with it then just tell him casually

no advice, I haven't told any of my family about my sexuality, but if I were you, I would tell him and conveying feelings of hope and trust.

I say go for it! I think it's easier to tell the opposite sex,
for the fact that they (most likely) like the same sex you like.
