Talking Amatuer drag. What to get? - January 7th 2012, 04:47 AM

Okay, so I'm thinking about starting to do drag, but I have no idea what sort of things I should get to make myself look like a legit guy. Any ideas/help for me?

I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive, so that two, three, four, five hundred will step forward, so the gay doctors will come out, the gay lawyers, the gay judges, gay bankers, gay architects … I hope that every professional gay will say ‘enough’, come forward and tell everybody, wear a sign, let the world know. Maybe that will help.” Harvey Milk, 1978

Ok so you're doing male drag?

I've done it once before. It is so much fun.

Basically, you need: Eye brow pen, foundation, you can get bald caps- if you want that look , a variety of male clothes, casual to smart, a hat if you've got long hair and don't want the bald look, If you want the whole look down there then I suggest you get 'packers', if not then good ol' pair of socks rolled up will do. Also, you'll need to strap down your breasts. I used clingfilm. Don't use clingfilm I makes it really hard to breathe You can get these things called 'binders' that are basically a really tight piece of breathable fabric that you can wear over your breasts.

Links:

Foundation

Packer- NON-PG13

Breast binder (alternatively a tight swimsuit will do)

Bald-ness

The foundation and eyebrow pen is so you can draw more manly eyebrows. Women's eye brows naturally are higher. You need to cover the eyebrows you have and draw flatter eye brows on you with the pen.

Is there a difference between eyeliner and eyebrow pencil?

Only a slight difference. Eyebrow pens are softer and draw a softer line and you can get more eyebrow-ish colours

Okay, so I'm WAY to poor for a binder, so does anyone know if sport bra(s)+ACE bandages will work well?

Nope. Wear a tight swimsuit or something made of lycra. It does depend on how full your breasts are as well.

sports bra + ace bandages can work. Officially people adivse against ace bandages, as there are sometimes some issues with them, especially if they are wrapped too tight (this can include difficulty breathing, bruised, or more damage), especially with frequent, extended use. If you are going to use ace bandages as a one off, every now and then, you should be fine, just make sure if you wrap too tight and struggle to breath, you loosen the bandages, or if you feel a lot of pain. Also preferly only do it for a few hours at a time.

I know I've painted it to sound dangerous, but I used bandages for months before getting a binder, daily, and I'm fine, and I know many people who are. There are geniunely risks to keep in mind, but they aren't that likely in the context you want.

A swimsuit might work, but it depends on your breast size.

Your stance, and walk are a big part of it. So consider how you are moving. I'm not really sure how to describe it, but just look at guys, even just standing around they hold themselves differently. And maybe practice talking slightly lower or more monotoned (I dont know how seriously you intend to take it, voice thing may not be applicable)

My bra size is DD, so they're pretty big, and I'm planning on doing a short act in february for a campus drag show, so I'd be in drag for a few hours. I've been working on my guy voice for a while, so I think I've got it down pretty well... My voice is pretty low to begin with (I sing alto 2 in choir). I'm thinking about like ACE bandage under swimsuit?

Hmm, Try the sports bra, like get a size smaller than usually, so it is tighter fitting. Then maybe ace bandage on top of the sports bra, just make sure it isn't too tight. Don't wear tight fitting clothes. make things baggy, so its not obvious you are a girl. OHHH, don't forget to stuff the crotch with socks!

yes, rolled up socks. Usually, a pair works, but if you want a big package, use more.
