Basically Slapped in the Face by my Church.. - January 13th 2012, 09:39 PM

So a while back when my girlfriend and I were going out the first time, my church found out and so I was kicked out of the youth group that I was helping lead and told how disgusting homosexuality is and how much of a sin it is. Has anyone else experienced this? I feel like I have to watch what I say or do now so I don't get their wrath back on me. I mean really? Jesus said to love everyone. And it says in the bible that no one is a mistake, God doesn't make mistakes. So uh... >.> How are gay people a mistake? We were made this way right? Well... they can go shove that in there...

I completely agree. Homosexuality isn't a sin. I have absolutely nothing against religion, I think religion is an important part of society.

It's the church I don't like.

Take me seriously.

I don't believe it's wrong, but in the christian bible there is quite a bit against homosexuality even in the new testament. But yes jesus did preach love and forgiveness. I've had the same problem with the christian church for some of the same reasons and others. Eventually I just gave up with them. They preach love but their rules don't.

I haven't told anyone in my family about how I am, but my mother and brother hate homosexuals. It's awful, because I have to keep everything inside. I can't wait until I can just get out, because they can't accept who I am. I'm not really religious at all, but they are. They think it is a sin, and I don't. I believe we were made like this, and we can't help it.
I would switch churches though, that is just awful.

They CAN shove it in there

Who here believes that you are born homosexual? That it isn't just a choice you make?

Because honestly I don't see why a sane person would choose to be discriminated against or shot down because of who they love. If they could choose to not be then they wouldn't, right? Also I agree with you, Ryochan. They preach love but don't show it. A lot of them are like that. They say they stand for one thing and do another. they are suppose to be bringing people towards the church and God. When they act like this (total hypocrites) it turns people away.

Sorry I think I'm sorta rambling. And I keep saying "they". I am a Christian, too but NOT like them. I have faith, not religion if that makes sense. Religion is man made and faith is God made in my opinion. I believe that all people are created equal. And I believe that people are born gay, therefore if you say they are a mistake you are saying that God made a mistake and contradicting what the Bible says about God and His character and what He is or isn't.

K i'm going to shut up now

I'm so sorry you were treated like that. Even though I'm a Christian, I'm often disgusted with the way that churches operate. No one has the right to tell you that you are disgusting for being in love with someone! Honestly, you shouldn't even try to get back into that youth group. Give up on them and walk away. If you can, try to find another church that is more accepting -- non-denominational churches tend to be more relaxed about things. Whatever you choose, it's important that you're in an environment where people look at who you are, accept it, and treat you with respect.

I completely agree with Sammi here. If it's possible, perhaps you'd like to try to find a different church that is more accepting. There may even be other churches of the same denomination as you that are more open-minded. What it comes down to, ultimately, is not how the religion operates but how the people choose to interpret it. There are Christians out there, like Sammi and many others, who believe but who don't look down on others for their sexuality. I know my girlfriend used to attend a Protestant church, and the leader of their youth group there was actually a lesbian.

So don't give up yet! I know it feels like you're walking on eggshells now, but there are churches and religions out there who will love and accept you for you.

Best of luck!

Wait seriously? That's amazing! Someone JUST yesterday told me (while defending them calling me disgusting and kicking me out) that people are "living in sin" shouldn't be a leader in the church.

I just still don't understand how they can ration that being born someway is living in sin. And lets say that it is....than no one else should be leading either because everyone's a sinner!

Omg I'm rambling agian, sorrry hahah.

Thank you guys for your responses Helps a lot! I luv uuuh

Re: Basically Slapped in the Face by my Church.. - January 14th 2012, 03:12 PM

About 4 years ago I was kicked out of my youth group. My girlfriend at the time and I were both in it, and all of the people in the group were all her friends. During the meetings, they would always crack jokes and hint at us. They clearly knew, and they were 100% okay with it. But one day 2 of the 3 adult heads of the group found out and made me leave. Not her. Just me. And the third one was my religion teacher the year before, and I remember her just looking at me and said 'sorry'. A month later she quit. So I suppose that something good came out of it.

I'm no longer religious, but I do believe in God. =P
I don't get why people think that it's a choice, because I agree.. Why would I choose to be discriminated against on a daily basis? Why would I choose to get physically harassed? I wouldn't.

Why were you kicked out and not her?! Ugh the "church" pisses me off so bad. They are such hypocrites it isn't even funny. I'm glad that the adult quit though.

Are you not religious anymore because of that incident? And yeah nobody would so I don't understand their argument. Also, a few people that i respect a lot have told me that the verses regarding homosexuality that are in the bible have been added way after the bible was created. Sooo...not very valid if you ask me But I'm not really sure if that's true or not. *shrugs*

Well I will be blunt the Bible DOES say it is a sin. However, it sounds to me that they took it a bit too far as they are commanded to still love you.

Certainly there are other churches that support gay rights. Your best bet to find one would be in a city. St. Louis has a good pride community, then of course there's San Francisco.

You're right it does. But saying that it is a sin, it also says that all sin is equal yet homosexuality is looked at as more wrong/despicable than most. And yeah they only seem to want to follow the commandments they think are okay. Not all of them like it says too.

Re: Basically Slapped in the Face by my Church.. - January 14th 2012, 07:56 PM

Hey, Sammy. I've been through something similar to that. In high school, I was on my church's Youth Worship Team for four years, Youth Leadership Team for two, and I was the president of my school's Gay-Straight Alliance my senior year. I didn't hide my involvement in any of the three groups from people (except my parents), but somehow, my YP didn't know I was even in GSA. When he found out (my parents found a GSA presidents' scholarship form in my room), he kicked me out of Youth Leadership Team, suspended me from Youth Worship Team, and only let me back on because I agreed to "meet with someone to sort out my confusion." Needless to say, I don't attend that church anymore, and they didn't change my feelings toward my sexuality at all. Actually, I might be slightly more gay; the girl I had to meet with was VERY attractive
But yeah, I've been there too. If you need to talk, my pm box is always open

“I cannot prevent anyone from getting angry, or mad, or frustrated. I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive, so that two, three, four, five hundred will step forward, so the gay doctors will come out, the gay lawyers, the gay judges, gay bankers, gay architects … I hope that every professional gay will say ‘enough’, come forward and tell everybody, wear a sign, let the world know. Maybe that will help.” Harvey Milk, 1978

I just wanted to say something
If they say being gay is a choice, then isn't being straight? They say that we're born straight, not gay. But if we're born straight why couldn't we be born gay? Aren't they kind of being hypocrites?
Love is love, why does it matter what gender the person is as long as you love them?

I hope that made some sense! xD
