My friend's girlfriend miscarried. - May 3rd 2012, 09:04 PM

A couple of weeks one of my best friends, D, told me and a couple of friends that his girlfriend was pregnant. It was a huge surprise ~ they're only 20 and 21, and they've just been together a couple of months, but once they'd gotten over the initial shock they decided they were very happy about it. A couple of days after D told us he told everyone else on facebook, and I've never seen him so ecstatic about anything.
However, the next morning came the news that the baby was gone. His girlfriend was only six weeks ~ am I right in thinking miscarriage isn't that uncommon this early on?? ~ but they are both absolutely devastated. D texted me telling me he just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry, something I never thought I'd see him say. I've added his girlfriend on facebook, even though I haven't met her yet, and I've let them know that I'm there for them both if they need anything, but my friend is absolutely devastated and I don't know what I can do for him. All of us are completely taken up at the moment with work and exams so contact is mostly limited to phone and facebook for the next week or so, but I don't know what else I can do to make sure they're doing ok.

You aren't superman (or girl); so don't throw this on yourself. The best thing you can do as a friend is: be a friend. What I mean by that is support him, check up on him, and when you get free time maybe take him out to do something. Saying you are going be there for someone is one thing, but actually doing it is another. Everyone (even strangers) say that they will be there for them, so make sure if he needs you, that actually are there.

Support, love, and care is the essentials for a situation like this; thats really all you are able/have to give to him.

Best wishes,
Chris
