I'd say that 9 times out of 10, "nothing" really is "something". Every now and then, "nothing" really is "nothing"... but because it's usually "something", and because women are so hesitant to say what's really wrong, men begin to assume "nothing" is always "something". =P

Sometimes its hard to be straight with a guy though, being too emotional tends to make a man shut down...at least in my experience.

True. But so does saying "nothing" every time you mean "something". Can't speak for every other guy, but it makes me stop caring whether there's something or not.

I hate hate haaaate when people use the term "nothing" to describe a situation where there really is something going on. I can't say I've never used it, though if it's been used, it's been used to describe a petty feeling that usually passes pretty quick (as in, I don't want to discuss it because I know it's a petty feeling and that it will pass), but for the most part, I avoid it. It's not that hard to be straight with anyone, though I've always been pretty well received. With the exception of once, my communication with my male friends and partners has been very, very good. But I tend to feel the way Acheron claimed when it's used towards me. I get the whole idea that "if they really care, they'll push you to fnd out what's wrong" or "if they really care, they won't give up on you," but to me, saying "nothing" when there really is "something" is just another form of game playing, and I disagree with it. Sure, our partners should listen to us when we need them, but if they're going to listen, and we expect them to, I think it's only fair we extend the same courtesy and be open and honest about it. And I've heard more than my fair share of women complain about how their partners don't open up to them (and use the term "nothing" or say "I don't want to talk about it") to have noticed this double standard.

I guess some people use it as a test of sorts.
But I also meant it in another sense. Like when a girl says "It's all or nothing" Meaning that she doesn't want to be just friends, her nothing is alway something.

The only reason I've used "nothing" is when I really would rather not talk about it..

However, he is too smart for that, and much to caring, and usually gets it out someway or another. When people say nothing but really are planning on telling you it's kind of funny to just go "oh well okay.." and then they're like "NO!" ..That was super random but anyways (:

My brother and boyfriend always tried to make this go both ways saying "We'll put it down when we're done if you'll put it up when you're done"

Oh yeahh? The day you sit down to use the bathroom and fall through the toilet seat I left down we will talk. Until then, you have no valid argument!

Wise words for the guys: date girls smart enough to work a toilet seat. If necessary, though, train her to look before she sits on anything. Thumbtacks are excellent for this purpose.
