Farting, like or dislike? - March 18th 2009, 03:27 AM

So, I know this may be a stupid question, but I'm curious. I know a lot of girls hate it when their boyfriends fart. I never understood though because it's not like it's something you can control. My girl friends complain about it SO much and it gets so annoying. I feel bad for their boyfriends because they make such a huge deal about it. On the other hand, I've asked guys before in the past, who were dating my friends, if they cared if they (the girl) farted and they always said no. So why are guys so much more laid back than girls are? Personally, I don't care. I'm not going to get mad at my boyfriend for farting because it's not like he can help it. I'm just wondering how the rest of you feel about the matter.

Hahaha Elle. That response was semi priceless.
Truthfully, I think that if you love someone, uncontrollable body functions should not matter. That being said, i've never had a boy do that in front of me, so I'd consider it very strange

I'm rather old fashioned, so I don't like anything like burping and farting in public. That's just a no-no for me. If it happens rarely, then accidents happen. All the time, we might have words over it.

I respect everyone's opinions, but I mean if your boyfriend has to fart, do you expect him to get up and leave the room and come back? What if you're watching a movie, or trying to sleep... To me, it just seems unfair not to accept that sort of thing. Out in public, I can understand being embarrassed by it because I can be like that too, but if it's at home or if you're alone, then it doesn't bother me whatsoever.

I think it's kinda funny when it slips out. Cos the latter gets so embarrassed, but I don't care at all. I just pretend it didn't happen to ease up the moment.

It's not something that I would like or want to put up with on a regular basis, but if it happens every now and then, I just won't say anything. I mean, I guess you can't hold it in sometimes, so no biggy, but...farting is so ewie

So long as it doesn't stink, and if it does, then he better light a candle or something. My boyfriend and I fart in front of each other plenty. It used to be embarassing, then it was funny, now it doesn't even really matter at all.

I grew up with a grandfather who farted constantly, and a mother who was the same (before she changed her diet), so it hardly bothers me.

Whether in public or when we're alone, can't say I really mind it. Unless s/he goes around doing it on purpose (I have had friends who have done this). Then it's just rude.

I'm not a fan of it, if it happens lots, but most of the time it's hilarious, and always seems to happen in the worst of times. Like serious conversations, which lightens the mood quite a lot.

I personally don't mind. I do prefer it to be 'excused' just cos I think it's polite, and I say it after as well.
My bf was really nervous about it when we first met, to the point that he apparently spent like the whole day holding it in until he dropped me home and I was 'safetly inside'.

My dad does it all the time so it really doesn't bother me but...I think it should be avoided since its rather inpolite, but thats just me.

Farting... what a timeless artform.

I'd hope people appreciate and give others the chance to do so, some people work hard to make them as loud and dirty as possible!

Besides, maybe keeping them in is worse? Instead of just getting it over with, the stink would be released little by little over an amazingly long amount of time! Which is worse in my opinion!

disclaimer: I'm a gentleman, and yes, i do hold my farts infront of the ladies.
But dammit if it isn't funny!

I always managed to fart outside of the eyesight range or hearing range of girls, plus mine don't seem to smell at all, so I'm liking how discreet and smooth I can be.

lol ok this is hilarious. My boyfriend and I have been dating a little over 2 years and i have NEVER ever heard him fart lol. I've done it a few times accidentally which was sooo embarrassing, but either he's a silent sneaky type, or he's just too modest. I think if it doesn't smell then by all means go ahead, but not all the time lol

Me and my guy friends are loud and proud when not in female company, make a huge noise about it, laugh along and everything, but a girl walks in the room... nothing ever happens...

My boyfriends does on occasion and it doesn't bother me at all. Most of the time it is when he can't hold it and he says "excuse me" or "sorry" after.
There are times when he is just being a typical boy and farts as loud as possible because it is funny, sometime I will hit him in like a playful way but I will laugh too, and even when he does this he always excuses him self or apologizes.
There are other times when he will get up and walk to the other side of the room and then fart then walk back.... he does that if they are going to smell. I don't ask how he knows....
We have been together for about to years now and he has only farted in front of me in the last 6 months as he held it in at first.
Now he just doesn't care... and it doesn't bother me, it is a normal bodily function.

Saying that, I don't burp or fart in front of him (or anyone in fact) if I can help it, if I do he doesn't care though.

Well it seems like I'm going out with Mr Immature, if we're in bed and he farts, he gets me in a headlock and traps me under the covers (or blames it on me)--he thinks its hilarious. Typical bloke...
I dont really care though cos everyone does it from time to time...

I don't date guys but if I did date one, it wouldn't bother me at all but I think it's more because I'm use to being around guys who do it and I know that it isn't something you can really control and sometimes it just happens.

And I do also find it pretty funny sometimes because well, I don't know why exactly but I guess that helps make the moment be funny instead of awkward and embarrassing.

If my girl flipped out when I farted I would end it right there. If you can't appreciate the art and effort that some guys try to put into controlling their farts, you probably can't appreciate a lot of things. Also, burping and farting are natural processes if you never let them happen, you can end up with dangerous digestive problems (no joke).

As far as understanding how some know when it will smell, and when it won't, or when it will be loud, or controlling it, it all takes practice. And yes, many guys get a kick out of practicing. I can usually tell if it will be loud or not, and (though less accurately) if it will smell or not.

It's a natural process, so it can't be taken too seriously. However, I can understand the frustrations of the partner of a "habitual farter", because generally it's polite to be discreet about it.

my boyfriend now shares his pooping stories with me. I would really like to not hear about how his time on the toilet was.

Well, about knowing how it would smell or how loud it would be--that's something I've mastered, myself. I just hold it in if it seems like it's going to be loud or smell bad. Only every now and then does a loud one sneak up on me, and thankfully, I'm usually alone whenever it happens.

My Dad's got some gastric issues (but, of course, he thinks it's funny as hell), and it's always grossed me out since I was little, so if I had a partner that was the same way, it would remind me of my dad too much, and noooo, girls do NOT grow up to marry men like their fathers xD
