I've seen on Wikipedia that coronavirus is a generic label of the virus famly, and COVID-19 is the specific strain of a coronavirus. The 19 is the year it was discovered. We just got in the habit of referring to it as coronavirus, when it's a generic term.

I will admit that I prefer using the incorrect generic term than to use something derogatory and xenophobic.
