Honestly, this will probably be the thing that ends America. The pandemic exposed every crack in our governmental infrastructure, from the sham economy to the broken healthcare system. So to be fair, even if the government was on top of it, I imagine things still wouldn't be great. What we do have instead is criminal negligence. Some of the governors and Donald Trump are busy trying to re-open schools in the fall, which is probably the quickest possible way to spread the disease. This will go down as the most badly managed crisis in American history.
In Japan, they have less than 1000 deaths and they didn't even close the economy down. Everybody there just wears a mask, so its harder to spread.
