It's one thing to say that you won't "crush" on people anymore, but it's a whole other idea to say that it doesn't exist. It's like if I said that I don't believe in snow, even though I've seen it before..

That's a good point. It sounds like he knows they exist and believes in them. I think he's trying to say he doesn't believe they work out, or don't accomplish anything.
