We use weights in gym class starting in 8th grade (around 13 years old). So I am assuming about 13 is a good age to start at least MINIMAL weights. We did a bigger weight unit (with like weight machines and bench pressing) sophomore year, which is age 16. I'd say you can safely lift as much as you want at age 16 without stunting your growth.
