There is no best way. Just don't do it. If you need to start a conversation about a particular topic - just go ahead and do it. Don't piss about trying to steer or manipulate conversations, especially when you are trying to get the conversation focused on yourself. Doing that is called "conversational narcissism", and it's considered to be rude. Also, it's never interesting for others involved.

Just answer it. Getting into too much detail is boring. Too little and it's kind of like waving her off. Use your discretion and common sense.
