Now I can't even make it three days without self-harming. I can't go inpatient again, the ER always sends me home, Im leaving outpatient soon, will I have to do this on my own?...im so scared...I can't tell my parents or else they'll restrict me from talking to my bf this afternoon.

Hey there,

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with self-harm. Please recognize how amazing seven weeks clean is. That deserves to be celebrated! It can definitely be a difficult thing to quit. However, it sounds like you know that it isn't a positive coping mechanism.

Finding an alternative to self-harm is key to stopping the behavior. This list provides a number of alternatives that you can try, including things you can do to distract yourself and things that you can do to express your feelings. The important thing to remember is that not every strategy works for everyone. Keep trying different strategies until you find one or more that work for you. The trial and error process can be frustrating, but it will be worth it in the end.

You mentioned not wanting to talk to your parents about your struggle with self-harm. Is there another trusted adult in your life that you can tell? This could be a favorite teacher, a guidance counselor, coach, club advisor, or religious leader. If there isn't a trusted adult that you can talk to, perhaps you can talk to a close friend or another family member. Having someone that you can open up to is extremely beneficial, as they'll be able to offer support when you need it.

I know it's difficult to stop, but I believe in you!

Take care,
Sam
