Drugs, Alcohol and Addiction Whether you are combating substance abuse or struggling with another addiction such as gambling, this forum is here to provide support and answer your questions.
I was talking to one of my friends the other day who SHs and she was telling me how it has become almost like an addiction for her. That sometimes even the smallest of things can set her off and make her SH. And that sometimes nothing big even happens but her thoughts get to her and then she SHs.
Does this happen to anyone else? Is it normal?
"Sometimes we just have to accept that some people are going to stay in our hearts Even if we aren't in theirs."
Well, SH isn't exactly a "normal" coping mechanism, but then again neither is smoking and drinking, etc.
But, yes, it has and does happen to me quite a lot.
Talk to your friend about getting some help, don't force her though because that will make it a lot worse. If your friend doesn't wish to stop right now, then there is nothing you can do to stop her - it's her body, her choice to be bluntly honest.
However, if she is suicidal/having suicidal thoughts you should tell someone immediately, preferably her parents or 911.
Remember that SH and suicide are two entirely different issues.
It happens to me also. Sometimes nothing can set me off and I will just self harm for no reason.
It might be a good idea to try to get you friend to get some help.
We do not fear death, we fear that no one will notice our absence. That we will disappear without a trace.
haii jen ...
yes it is normal for things like that happen to most people who start SHing ... its adictive and its normal... but ... you should try to get her to stop
Yes, I would definitely say it's normal. When something destructive becomes a habit, it soon becomes an addiction.
I've experienced this SH addiction many times. It's meant to be a 'quick fix' for any problem. But ends up backfiring.
When you get accustomed to using the 'easy way out,' which essentially, is what SH is (not dealing with the problem at hand). Then it's easier and easier to take the easy way out for smaller and smaller things. Eventually you won't even need a reason at all, you'll SH just for the purpose of SH. Addiction is addicting.
I hope that answered your question. But like others said, you might want to consider talking to your friend and try to convince her to get help.
Take care,
