"Alternative Beliefs" are blocked on the school bring-home laptops? - January 4th 2015, 12:08 AM

I can access every Christian,Jewish,Islam,Buddhist site under the sun.
But i can't access the Atheist,Wicca,Satanist websites.

I find it weird that this only occurs when i am at home on my personal wireless
and that they don't have it set to do the same level of filtering at school.

The software installed is FortiClient and the Web Filter for the Wireless at school is FortiGuard btw.

Whilst it's always worth remembering that there are different laws in different parts of the world, I think saying that is probably jumping the gun a bit.

I don't know specifically about the filtering software you mention, but what seems likely is that they've selected categories of preset filtered websites. The theory is probably that you'll need access to major religions for research in some subjects but that they want to avoid any possible cult-like mentalitied (not every religion has one of course, most don't - those categories just act as an overprotection).

If you want more information on their filtering policy, your best bet is to contact your school's IT department. They should be able to explain the restrictions they have in place and lift them if necessary.

Smile Re: "Alternative Beliefs" are blocked on the school bring-home laptops? - January 4th 2015, 09:28 PM

I have a Chromebook at home so i don't really bother with it.

I find no legit reason for them to block "Alternative Beliefs"
pertaining to Atheists,Wicca,Satanism etc . I can understand
why Satanism may blocked. No good reason for the other stuff
as i think the law only requires them to block Pornography (Good reason there)
and Piracy and i'm sure Gore sites etc but i don't think "Alternative Beliefs"
were mentioned as a requirement.

I don't think the school IT is trying to save face
as these aforementioned blocked site's are blocked only at home.

I live in a Religion and Irreligion and LGBT tolerant state
of which is New Hampshire and the school has LGBT folks (like me)
and Atheists (like me again) and have no issues in regards to that.

It is the school laptop and it is legal for them to do whatever they want to it
and they did state that in written form etc. I just wanted some actual logic behind it.

Sorry for the wall of text.

- I knew from reading Reddit that Hospitals and School's usually block "Alternative Beliefs" and so this came of no surprise and that's why i bought a Chromebook for
messing around at home so it don't bother me too terribly , just wanted to point it out.

I will search the Google's to find out more , so yea.
