Can you use too much lotion on your tattoo? -
April 29th 2010, 01:45 PM
So I was wondering how often you should be washing and putting lotion on a new tattoo. My artist told me once or twice a day, but I've heard so many different things that I'm now confused
Right now I'm following my artist's directions, washing and cleaning it two times a day, but I was wondering what those of you with tattoos did when you got yours.
Thanks in advance.

When I first got my tattoo, since it is small, i was told to put A&D ointment on it (stuff used for dipper rash and burns). after about a week then I was told to use cocoa butter a few times a day.
i know that for the first week or so that you have a tattoo, you dont want to put too much on it because you want the skin to be able to breath still.

Yes it is possible to use too much lotion. You just want to lightly lotion the tattoo not smother it in lotion, so if your tattoo has a glossy glare to it after youre done rubbing the lotion in, then you have too much and need to dab some off with a paper towel. Otherwise twice a day is normal, you don't want to put too much on and have any scabs become soggy.

Its really easy to put too much lotion on a tattoo, and doing so causes the tattoo scabs to bubble and lift the ink.
I always advise baby nappy rash cream twice a day (a tiny amount, to create a film over the tattoo but not smoother it) do this until the scabs have completely gone...
if its all loverly and sunny where your at (not normally an issue where I am) once the scabs have gone make sure you put sun lotion on around the tattoo (again little bits no smothering) This way the colours wont fade to quickly.
