Would this be fair immigration policy? -
I think a lot of what ICE has done is highly unethical. Nobody who has lived here for years and assimilated should be deported. Not a single person.
However here is what Id like to see happen:
-immigration policies loosened relative to the Trump administration
- English becomes the official language of the US
-newcomers must make progress in learning English otherwise face deportation UNLESSS they have a valid excuse like 1) asylum (cant know english because their home country doesnt speak it and there is a signifiicant human rights problem that can be held to be valid in court), 2) making reasonable progress in becoming American adjacent (working as well as demonstrated attempts to learn English (that arent filibuster)-perhaps in cases where the person does not work due wealth/self sufficiency, relax this requirement a bit,3) disability that prevents someone from learning English. Or 4) they do work work, but in a field where little human commmunication or the slightest legal knowledge is required (an uber driver or a worker at a hispanic restaurant or something).
This would be great policy in my opinion as I frankly think non-English speaking workers can be a MASSIVE liability in some positions. I had an illegal entry in my apartment in the past because frankly, the hispanic worker was not able to understand the regulations about entry that were written in English. Because the laws are primarily descripted in English, it should be mandatory to at least arttempt to learn it unless you are in a position where no problems can occur from not knowing English (retirement, completely non-social fields of work, etc). I dont care if you are a roofer and dont know a word of english, as long as the supervisor does and you are cooperating with both the customer and them. But if you simply break into someone’s apartment because you are too lazy to learn the language or the law on that, maybe ICE should actually intervene and get you the fuck back to wherever you came from. You clearly don’t know the law and I thought ignorance of the law being no excuse is what applies ro citizens? But I guess you want exemption for being an alien?
Yes, if this happened today, Id honestly consider making a report to ICE. I believe we should be able to live wherever we want. I (and him)bshould be able to just drop in and live in some other country as I want, but with a very important disclaimer. I should actually be required to show progression of assimilation if that is important for eventually achieving maximum productivity. If the laws and street signs are English, that should be the official language. The idea of America as a melting pot was possibly just conceived to make the cololialists feel better about themselves. Truthfully, we are invaders. As such, I would cut Native Americans a lot more slack on this, more than is currently offered actually. We invaded them. Give them some sort of refugee status from our own invasion. But we are our own country now, we are not a country of immigrants. Thats just a “feel good” myth. Would it not be wrong of me to just move to a non-English speaking country, act offended when people cant understand when I say “no,espanol” while making zero eye contact and acting annoyed, and then try to guilt trip them into a tip? What?
Feel this should apply to Americans in other countries as well. Would be wrong of me to move to another country to utilize services not offered here if you had no desire to assimilate at all. I dont feel it would be wrong if I won the powerball, hence the “not needing to work/speak the language to work” exception, but yeah I feel it would be otherwise unethical. Why should it be treated when someone treats the US like that? I know many foreigners who are bilingual- makes them actually more interesting and inpressive than the average monolsingual. But then there are those who enter your apartment illegally because they cant interpret or read US statute. They should be forced to learn or deported
This post is not racist at all: hispanics are also Caucasian. If disagree, please ask me why this isnt just a dispute over borders between similar peoples?
Not a slight at any nationality at all. Id honestly move to Mexico if I could…but only if done right. Id need to know their language, culture, holidays, etc. first. That is only right. The opposite form of illegal immigration does happen, where English speaking Americans attempt to move to their country, and that should be punished similarly. Every bit as wrong.

I feel like classes to learn English should be readily accessible whether you speak Spanish, Polish, etc. They can't meet the requirement of learning English if all the classes are spread miles apart, are all during working hours, or cost hundreds of dollars. My library does offer a conversational English thing but it appears to be once a month and I don't know if it's just for those with Spanish as a first language.
