Effective ways to organize rooms
By Chantal (Atropos)

We all have moments when we realize our home isn't very organized or it's very cluttered. It's important to have an organized space to work and live in, as having a cluttered and messy space can affect how we see things and can reduce our motivation. Here are a few tips and tricks for each room to keep them clutter free and organized.

Living room:
Have a book shelf or CD rack to place your favourite movies and CDs so you have access to them whenever you need them. This also is a great way to keep them visible and not in a pile. You can also organize them alphabetically, by genre, or by company.

Keeping things up off the floor makes the room look bigger as well.

Dining Room:
Keeping a clean dining room makes the presentation look inviting and makes it feel more welcoming for guests to use. Having some decor on the table can bring out the room more. If you have any shelves or a French cabinet you can display your fancy cups, glasses and dishes; you can also showcase your photos and other knick-knacks.

Kitchen:
The kitchen is where a lot of us spend the most time, whether that is cooking or baking, or preparing meals. It's important to have areas to store your cookware, and other kitchen items. Having a place for those items makes it easier to find what you need and keeps everything neat and orderly.

Organize similar items into separate sections. For example, have a space for cups and glasses, different sizes of plates, different sizes of bowls, and any other dishes you may have. Store items that you use frequently on lower shelves that are easy to reach. You can have other areas where you also put special-occasion dishes up high if you don't normally use them. This allows you to easily access what you need and use the most.

The space under your counter can serve as a safe place for small appliances. Storing your small appliances here when they are not in use gives you more counter space.

Cookware can be stored in the lower part of your stove and if you are short for space, you can store pots in the oven (make sure you take them out before you turn on your oven). You can also store them under the counter like the small appliances.

Bedroom:
Folding your clothing and placing it into drawers or hanging them in the closet both work perfectly in keeping your clothing neat and clutter free. If you have space underneath your bed you can fit flat bins there, in which you can store off season clothes, sheets, or jackets. You can also put hooks on your door to hang up any bath robes or jackets. In the closet you can hang up a shoe rack, which allows for your shoes to be more organized and easier to find.

Bathroom:
Keeping things organized in a bathroom can be challenging because you can be in a rush. Most bathrooms have a drawer or a few drawers, a medicine cabinet, and counter space that you can utilize. Consider purchasing plastic containers that can be placed on shelves, in drawers, or in cupboards. You can store many of your everyday products in them.

Medicine cabinets are a great way to keep any medication or vitamins safely. This allows you to know where your medication and/or vitamins will be and it keeps things neat and organized.

Basement or crawl space:
If you have a basement or crawl space you can utilize the space effectively. If you have a finished basement with closets and shelves you can use those to store items like holiday season decorations, seasonal clothing, or storing food or hygienic items. If you have a pantry you can store canned goods or seasoned goods there. These options provide more space for storage and you can also install shelving units to store more items. It's best to store items in plastic bins in case of a basement flood or leak. Even if your basement or crawl space isn't finished, you can still use the space by placing items in temporary plastic bins.

Closets:
In our haste to tidy up, many of us sometimes put things into boxes and then into closets, which can make it difficult to find what we need. Closets are also used to store coats, shoes, clothing, suitcases, and any other items we might have. Here are a few helpful ideas on what you should use your closets for so you get the full use out of the small spaces.

Front & back entrance closets: Your front and back entrance closets are used to hang up coats, sweaters, mittens, gloves, and any outdoor formal jackets. You can also store your shoes neatly inside by getting a shoe rack. All your shoes will be nicely fitted on the rack for easy finding. You can also use a container to store your gloves/mittens and other small items.

Hall closets: Hall closets may be found near your laundry room, front and back entrance, or in hallways of your home. You can use them for many different storage purposes such as cleaning supplies, blankets, sheets, and towels. Some of the closets come with shelves to store items or an empty small room to store cleaning products.

Bedroom closets: This is a place to hang up your clothing like jackets, shirts, dress pants, dresses, and a variety of other clothing. It keeps the clothing neat and tidy for easy finding. You can also use storage bins in your closets to separate summer and winter clothing.

Keeping places organized in our home can bring out more space, allow you to feel less stressed, and give you more areas to store items. Living in an organized home allows you to know where items are kept, and gives you places to store items away during seasonal months. By using a few simple tips and some common sense, you can organize your house effectively and live clean and clutter free.
