Apple iPhone Slowdown
Apple iPhones are one of the most popular brand of phones in the world. On December 20, 2017, Apple announced that there had been a software update that forced older iPhones to slow down. Apple claimed to do this to help balance the aging of the lithium batteries. As a lithium battery starts to get older, it begins to malfunction by freezing, shutting off randomly, and not holding a charge very well, especially if it’s very cold or warm. Some older batteries will even jump from 25% down to 1% with opening a simple app.
Tyler Barney, who is a 17-year-old high school student at Mt Juliet High School in Tennessee, was the one who exposed what Apple was doing to help force iPhone users to upgrade their phones. Tyler mentioned that he was becoming frustrated with his iPhone because it would always freeze after every ‘keystroke’. Tyler decided that while he was waiting for a software update for his phone, he would use his brother's. His brother’s iPhone was a year younger than his, but they were both an iPhone 6. After doing some research, Tyler saw that it was recommended that he replace his battery in his phone, but iPhone batteries are impossible to replace without an expert with the right tools. Once he replaced the battery his phone instantly sped up. Tyler then took his newly discovered information to the web and posted about it, and that’s when Apple announced that they had been ‘throttling’ the phone speed in order for them not to shut down randomly.
Since admitting to throttling their iPhones, there have been eight class action lawsuits against Apple. With that, Apple is now offering lowered prices for replacement batteries across the world, but the prices are different in each country. This offer started in late January 2018 and runs all the way until the end of December 2018. The affected phones were: iPhone 6, 6S, SE , and iPhone 7.
Some people think that havingA pple slow down your phone might stop it from shutting down completely as it will help prolong the life of the battery, while on the other hand, people believe that Apple is slowing them down to be able to get more money out of the customers, because they would either need to get a new phone or a new battery.
Most new iPhones start at approximately 499 CDN and goes up to around 1700 for the newest iPhone and replacement batteries start at around $99 CDN.
By doing this, Apple is jeopardizing the trust of their customers, however, they still have a lot of people who will stay with them. In a recent survey, 92% of users said that they would stick with an Apple phone when it’s time to upgrade, but looking at the competition, only 77% said that they would stick with a Samsung Source (http://time.com/5078060/apple-iphone-slow-down-update/).
As of March 2018, there’s a 4-6 week wait for a replacement iPhone battery as they have been slammed since the news released that they are lowering the costs.
