Protecting yourself from cyberbullying

Protecting yourself from cyberbullying
By Haley (Halcyon)

Due to the pandemic, many of us are spending more time at home and using online platforms more frequently; whether it's for work, studying or socialising. While there are many benefits to staying connected with people, it's not without risks. Here are some ways to protect yourself from cyberbullying.
  • Check your privacy settings. Social networking sites can sometimes change their policies, so check the privacy settings from time to time to make sure you are only sharing information with those you trust. You can also block people from contacting you if you need to.
  • Think before you post. Avoid posting anything that you don't want everyone to know. Once it's online, it is difficult to remove, and information can be easily spread once in the public domain.
  • Be respectful of others. Try not to contribute to cyberbullying by responding with hostility as this can sometimes provoke and add fuel to a situation. Treat others how you would want to be treated.
  • Keep evidence. Take screenshots in case things escalate and reach out for help. Report the bully and speak to a trusted adult.
  • Find safe ways to spend more time in the real world. Try a new hobby that you can immerse yourself into. Take a walk outside and feel the benefits of nature.
