To avoid going off topic in a thread:
The Day of Silence was not started for Matthew Sheppard. I actually know one of the founders of the Day of Silence very well (Jesse Gilliam<3). The first Day of Silence was held at the University of Virginia by a friend of Jesse's, and the next year they took it national.
Now, last years Day of Silence (2008) was held in memory of Lawrence King. But the day, in general, isn't for anyone.
