Can multivitamins help depression? -
April 26th 2013, 07:46 PM
I've been taking multivitamin tablets for the past week and I've been feeling much less depressed. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. It's the only thing I've changed in my diet/lifestyle.

The B's are your energy. When you're depressed you have absolutely no energy. And when you have energy, it's a lot tougher to feel depressed.
Another way to help depression? Take Fish Oil. I've been doing it for my weightloss and when I stop for a week or more, I can notice myself considerably more sad.
Use this to your advantage. Don't just hope it's a quick fix - take this and make it yours! You can do so much with this decreased feeling of depression

See this is great! Keep doing what you're doing but make sure you start doing other things to help your depression. I've been there, trust me, and it's really tough to climb yourself out of a depression hole. But with this bit of improvement, you can climb yourself out. I know you can!

Yes, it definitely can help. If you have a nutrient deficiency, your mood can be a lot lower.
I can also suggest from person experience that B complex vitamins also help. And St. John's Wort too - its actually been used for centuries as a natural antidepressant,

It can certainly help to take vitamins/minerals if you are deficient (especially in B-vitamins). B1 (thiamine) deficiency has been proposed as a cause for Korsakoff's syndrome in alcoholics, which is basically neurodegeneration, amnesia and all sorts of fun brain damage. Personally, I never experienced a significant benefit from supplements or fish oil, but I do eat a lot of meat, fish, and whole grains. I did notice, however, that when I was trying to lose weight (eating less) I felt very depressed, so vitamin deficiency could have been a factor. Or maybe that was just ice cream deficiency
I'll second the endorsement for St. John's Wort, although great care must be taken when combining it with SSRI antidepressants like Zoloft and Prozac. Definitely talk to your doctor before starting.
