Question First Aid Advice - Cutting - January 1st 2012, 03:44 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Two quick questions.

1. How can you tell if you need to get medical attention as opposed to just slapping a few bandaids on yourself and calling it a day? In other words, how deep is too deep?

2. I usually cut/scratch/burn on my upper thigh or near my hipbone. Is this more or less 'safe' than other places, in terms of accidentally nicking an artery or something? I'm almostly completely medically clueless when it comes to things like this. :/

Ok here are the answers to your questions.
1. Too deep is when alot of blood comes out or you are in alot of pain. As for the band-aids, if you have to put on more than 2 or 3 it's too much.
2.It's actually dangerous to do that anywhere on your body. Some places would be a little better than that and some would be a little worse. No matter where you cut, scratch, or burn yourself it's all dangerous. I would recommend not cutting or burning yourself at all.

Hi there.

I think you should take a look at this. However, this is not the same as getting medical help and if you think you need to get yourself checked out then I suggest you do so. We're not medically trained and obviously, we don't really know how bad your self harm is and therefore we can't tell you if you've gone to deep for definite so it might be best to get it checked out if you're unsure.

I hope this helps. We're here if you want to talk to us.

Thanks, you guys! I appreciate the replies.

And I do understand that SH is bad no matter where you cut, but since medical treatment really isn't an option for me (at least not treatment for this kind of thing) I want to make sure I'm being careful about it.
