Chess - July 20th 2021, 05:04 AM

Do you like chess? Do you know how to play it?
Variations of the game we call chess today have been played for centuries and it's one of the world's most popular games. There are countless types of boards: pocket-sized ones to take on road trips, beautifully-carved wooden or magnetic ones and - of course - digital versions to be played on-line; this shows what a universal game it is. The rules are not difficult to learn. There has been an upsurge in the popularity of chess recently due to Netflix series called 'The Queen's Gambit'.
If you'd like to try it, ask your friends or look for chess clubs in your area. There's also a site: https://www.chess.com/ which offers fantastic tutorials, chess theory and games for free.

My uncle taught me how to play chess at a very young age. I found it to be quite enjoyable, though I always lost.

My biggest issue with chess is that it's a game not just of strategy, but patience and proper planning. You can spend ages planning out your next move, and the one after that, and the one following that. As much as I enjoy chess, I'm not a very patient person and have terrible issues with attention. It's too slow a game for me to play, so I don't bother. Even the speed-round chess.

I used to play chess with my dad, years ago. Haven't played it since, I don't think. I'd like to get into it again but I've probably forgotten how to play

Re: Chess - July 29th 2021, 04:24 PM

I've played chess a few times but mostly when I was much younger. I actually only know how maybe 2 of the pieces move, my brain always struggled to retain that many rules for one game. My dad once had a really beautiful glass chess set and I was always desperate to play with it, but I never did.

Yes, there are such beautiful chess sets out there! Hollie, your Dad's glass one must have been stunning.
