I cant concentrate on homework no matter how hard i try. - March 11th 2012, 04:51 PM

I could spend an hour on homework and be done, but no, i get distracted with everything and end up wasting my sunday afternoon doing homework all day.

I have tried:
-Bribing myself with stuff to get the problems done.
(I end upmaking excuses to get more of what i want and end up getting off topic)

-Setting a timer and getting as much done as i can before it goes off.
(I kept looking at the time, and got less done)

-Sitting away from the TV, Computer, etc.
(Guess what? I twirled my pencil for 20minutes and got the least done so far)

As a result, i wind up just stopping after a few hours and being done, but then i end up with a bunch of missing assignments and crap like that.

My mom doesnt uderstand this either. She always tells me to just get it done.

HOW THE HELL DO I DO THAT?

I cant work at homework for more then 5 minutes without getting distracted by anything.

WHat is wrong with me? How can i fix this?

Hey dude.

Sounds like you could have ADD. (I think I do, as well.) I wind up doing like... twenty minutes of homework at a time every hour until it's done. I think my lack of attention span is almost directly related to intelligence because there are just so many more things that deserve thinking about than finding the determinant of some pointless math problem.

See a doctor, get some pills, live happy and concentrated.

While it couldn't hurt to see someone and receive an assessment (not just for ADD/ADHD, but learning disorders in general), I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that taking "concentration pills" will solve your problem. It's actually pretty common to get distracted when you're doing something that's not interesting to you. Bribing yourself obviously won't work if you don't stick with it. Isolating yourself from distractions won't always work, if the problem is that you're bored - being isolated will just make you even more bored! What may help you is to focus - really focus - on what your goals are, and what the consequences are for not completing your assignments in a timely manner. As you grow older, you become better at disciplining yourself. Lacking discipline isn't the same thing as having ADD/ADHD or a learning disorder.

I am definitely gonna focus more on my goals. I think that will help. I may have ADD.
