In Florida, beer/wine/anything fermented can be sold at a gas station or grocery store but liquor is separate. This is not true for all states, but it is true in most. Liquor stores commonly have to close earlier than the general alcohol cutoff time, so Im used to that. Also, I try to avoid distilled liquor so it doesnt really bother me. However, this is the only county Ive lived in where businesses must pay for the right to sell beer/wine for retail past 12am when the bars are open until 3am. Makes no sense. It is also seen as a huge deal to sell alcohol after hours for some reason. Ive seen people lose their jobs over this. Someone sold me alcohol after the cutoff time and next day they were fired for selling after hours. I feel bad as he was a very nice employee. Yes, he was probably selling to others as well, but I am left wondering if it was my purchase specifically that led to his boss discovering it. It didnt occur to me at the time that he would get fired as I believed their special license to sell after hours allowed them to sell at any time, but there was indeed still a cutoff.
While this post was originally about retail, this can literally get bars shut down by the police. It is taken very seriously in America (like the age 21 drinking age- in Germany you can have a beer with dinner at 12 but if that happened in America, those parents would lose custody if caught). It very much is one of those rules the cops like to heavily enforce and want to see on the books.
