Not sure what to do about this research project - January 18th 2024, 12:17 AM

So I’m not entirely sure if this goes here so apologies if not but this is a point of stress and anxiety for me. I’m in a research project outside of my actual classes about certain recent events. I mostly chose to join for the opportunity to learn and share information about the the topic but the professor told us at the first meeting that since we’ll be focusing on research for the project, we won’t have to do the class work if we have her for a class as long as we still show up and learn. The biggest problem for me though is that we need to be unbiased for this, or at least we’re supposed to be. I’ve been trying but after everything I’ve been seeing I don’t think I can. I’m naturally a very passionate person and the current events the project is about has had me in tears. But I don’t want to drop out because of that? I don’t know if I should talk to my professor about it? The presentations for each group are going to get media coverage, and we got a grant from our school for it, which adds pressure of course, but this information is important and I want to share it, I’m just worried that my personal feelings will somehow mess things up, even if I’ve tried to get the information I’ve gotten objectively

Hey,

I'm going to move this to the Work, Studying, and Learning forum because I think you'll get better advice there.

I think it's okay to ask your professor about it! You can say that you are struggling to view the information you have gathered objectively and are having a hard time remaining unbiased because you're passionate about the topic. You can ask the professor what she does to remain unbiased in situations like this. Research is new to you and you are still learning, so it may help to get tips from the professor. You can either email her, call her, or visit her during her office hours to get her perspective on things.

Hello and thank you so much for coming onto teenhelp and telling us about what you have been going through and I hope that you will be okay soon. What the other user is saying is true, ask for help whenever you need it at school and they will help you out. When we are in school they want us to get better and when we don't understand something, it's always a good idea to ask for help so then we will understand this better and we will be able to finish our assignment. I hope you will be okay soon and everything works out for you soon.

I think talking to your professor about it is a good idea. Personal opinion is human nature and even the best researchers have one! The key is to remain unbiased when viewing the results of the research and not letting your personal opinion affect the information that you share, particularly if that information doesn't align with your personal beliefs on the topic. Your professor will likely have some great insights to share about how she remains unbiased during research.

Best of luck with your project!
