Activities to help get you into the spirit this holiday season
By Cassie (cynefin)

Even though the holiday season is loved by a lot of people, it is a rather difficult time for others. Some find it easier to get into the spirit than others, and a few might not care for the spirit at all. The loved (yet dreaded) season is on its way - here are a few holiday activities you can do on your own or with others if you want to try increasing your holiday spirit. If not, that's okay too.

Watch some festive movies or TV shows. Many channels have festive movies, and some play parades as well. Watch the movie as its playing, or record it to keep something to watch later. You can also pop in a DVD or look for movies and shows on a streaming service you have.

Try your hand at cooking or baking. A lot of people like to make cookies around this time of year, but you can also try different cakes or breads. You can also try making a specific lunch or dinner dish for yourself or someone else. Experiment with what makes you happy. Use a favorite recipe you already know, or look into new ones. The smell of a baked good or another dish can be uplifting.

Get out your decorations, or make some new ones. Decorations can be expensive but some stores such as the Dollar Tree or Dollar General (in the US) have decorations for lower prices. You can also look online for different ways to decorate at an inexpensive price. Think about what kind of décor you like. Do you enjoy the glow of twinkling lights in the dark, or do you like the shiny tinsel? Incorporate the items that will bring a smile to your face when you see them.

Burn candles or wax melts. Smell is a very strong sense for some, and burning a particular scent, such as cranberry, cinnamon, or fresh balsam is soothing. A lot of people (myself included) who struggle during the holidays especially like different festive scents. An electric wax melter may be a safer alternative as opposed to a candle or tealight if you are frequently in between rooms or have pets.

Consider buying or making gifts. The holidays are not solely about gifting, but people tend to enjoy gathering gifts for others; it tends to be a good mood lifter. If you can't or don't want to purchase or make a gift for someone else, do some self-care and choose something for yourself.

Get your crafty side out. Make decorations, gifts, or anything else you feel like creating. If you can't think of ideas, there are many ideas online that use fairly easy to get products, or items that you likely already have around the house.

Spend time with others or do self-care activities. If there's anyone you're close with, consider spending time with them. If you're unable to see them due to distance, write a letter, send an email, or pick up the phone. Writing a letter can be especially helpful if you're missing a lost loved one during this time. Do you have any children in your life? Consider spending some quality time with them. Seeing a child's belief in the magic of the holidays can be quite uplifting. As an alternative, or as an addition, do things to take care of yourself. These can be regular activities or festive self-care activities; whatever you're interested in will do. Some of the above activities can be done for self-care.

Engage in older traditions or make new ones of your own. This can be a great way to connect with others (if you wish to) or a way to keep yourself engaged. Are there any traditions you really liked when you were younger? Consider doing those. If you can't, put your own spin on your past traditions, or make some new ones of your own.

Volunteer somewhere if you can. A lot of places such as soup kitchens, homeless and animal shelters, hospice centers, or hospitals could use more volunteers around this time of year. Giving back can be a positive experience and if you like a place you volunteer at, perhaps you can stay there long term.

Think about what the holidays mean to you. Is there something 'untraditional' or non-festive that symbolizes the holidays for you? If so, do it if you're able to. If there isn't, what do you want the holidays to mean, if anything? Think about how you can make it happen if that is something you're interested in.

Reflect on this year, and think about the upcoming year. What did you like about this year? What went well, and what didn't? Is there anything you want to implement or stop in the upcoming year? End things in a positive note and think about the things that have brought a smile to your face, or things you're thankful for. Sometimes the smallest thing can make you smile.

Some of these activities might help get you into the spirit, while others might not. If you want to increase your holiday enthusiasm, try a few of these things. If you don't want to, work on taking care of yourself during this time. Remember, the holidays aren't forever: you'll get through it, regardless of whether you have holiday spirit.
