I'll be receiving my first flogger in the post next week.

I haven't been in the scene all that long. Been going to munches for six months or so. I've had an interest for longer than that, but fewer opportunities to explore it.

There's no need to use toys at all, necessarily, and particularly if your boyfriend is a little shy about kink. You can have satisfying impact play with your bare hands. But if you want a first impact toy, I'd recommend a flogger. Something in soft leather with a lot of fairly short tails, so it's easy to control and not too vicious. They're very versatile: obviously you can hit someone with them in a variety of ways, but you can also trail them across the skin as a nice way to tease someone. And while they take a little practice (beat the shit out of a pillow for a while to get your swing accurate, or get your boyfriend to do the same if he'll be whipping you), they don't take years of training alone on a secluded mountaintop like a bullwhip would. I still get more use out of my short flogger than I do out of any of my other toys.

Also, you didn't ask for this, but a quick guide to hitting: good places to hit are anywhere with a thick layer of fat or muscle. This means the backs of the shoulders, the ass, and the upper thighs. You can hit lightly across most of the rest of the body, but avoid the lower back, the spine, elbows and knees, and the face and neck.

Go for it. Be aware that a Delrin cane will hit harder than a wooden one, though, so if you're used to wood then adjust your swing (or get your boyfriend to adjust his).
