Humboldt Broncos bus crashBy Brittany (.Brittany.)

In Saskatchewan Canada, every family’s worst nightmare came true. On Friday April 6, 2018, a bus that was carrying a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey team was struck by a transport truck at the intersection of highway 35 and highway 335 approximately 300 km north of Regina. The team was heading to a playoff game in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, which is about 2.5 hrs from Humboldt, when their bus was hit. The bus was carrying twenty-nine people, including the team players, personnel, and the driver. Ten team players, five team personnel, and the bus driver were all killed in the accident with ages ranging from 16-59.

The tractor trailer was from a Calgary, Alberta based company that was hauling a load of peat moss. The driver was not injured but did receive a lot of mental health support after the collision. The company has since had their license suspended until the end of the investigation. With the way the vehicles were traveling, the bus would have had the right of way as the truck would have had a stop sign. There’s a line of trees along the road which could have possibly made the intersection harder to see.

The collision hit not only the province, but the country hard. People from across the country were participating in “Sticks out for Humboldt” which is where people left hockey sticks on their front porches, in memory of the sixteen people lost and the thirteen who were still recovering in hospital. On Thursday April 12, it was “Jersey day” when people from across the country wore any type of sports jerseys in honor of the victims. On this day many Tim Hortons locations were selling donuts and cookies that were green and yellow to raise money. On the day of the accident a Go Fund Me page was started and as of April 14, 2018 there has been $11.4 million raised by people all over the world to assist with medical bills, counsellors, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, and time off work for the families and the first responders who were at the scene when it happened.

On July 6, 2018, it was announced that the truck driver, 29-year-old Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, would be facing 29 charges in total. The charges included 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily injury. Sidhu was released on $1000 bail under the condition that he is to surrender his passport and not drive at all.

On January 8, 2019, Sidhu pleaded guilty to all charges; he didn’t want to have a trial.

On March 22, 2019, the judge delivered Sidhu’s sentence of 8 years in prison for each count of causing death and 5 years for each count of bodily harm. He will serve these sentences one after another. This totals approximately 193 years in jail.
