Anxiety. - February 10th 2022, 04:31 AM

My anxiety has increased again due to a number of reasons.
One of them is: I work full-time in childcare and at a pub on the weekends. For the last couple of months, I found that I have grown increasingly anxious especially during my evening shifts due to my fear of a patron being so intoxicated that they may fall down and hurt themselves because I served them too much. I know they are adults and they are accountable for their own actions but I still feel like it would be my fault if something happened. I've been working at a bar for the last four years and nothing like this has happened but I just can't get it out of my head.

Sometimes thoughts like that really suck! I think that even though you know that it's never happened, you're around a population who, whether intentionally or not, may get too drunk and make their own mistakes. Are you able to cut people off if you're worried that they are getting to a point that they may have had too much? You can possibly ask your boss what the signs are that someone has had too much so you know what to watch out for, which can give you some comfort?

Thanks Dez for your reply. I tend to cut people off if I feel like they are getting too intoxicated but I feel like my managers undermine me and say to the patrons they can have one drink per person. At the end of the day, I've tried.

I think it would be a good idea to speak to your managers and co-workers at the bar about restricting and regulating alcohol intake by your patrons. In the US, bars and other establishments serving alcohol can lose their license to serve if they have too many violations — including incidences of drunken and disorderly conduct by patrons. If you're not feeling too comfortable talking to your manager or other co-workers about this, do some research on the liquor laws where you live before going to them about it. That way, you have something solid to present to them.

Your concern is completely valid, and I'm sure it's happened to other people in the past. Way more than deemed appropriate.
