In such a bad mood it's unbelievable. Sitting at my desk biting my tongue to hold back tears because of this stupid system that leaves people like me destined to fail. People who have an off day or maybe don't do so well under pressure are all going to fail with the Open University - congratulations!!
When you do a module with the OU, you submit essays throughout the year. Your scores in these make up your Overall Continuous Assessment Score, or OCAS. At the end your scores in the exam make up your Overall Exam Score, or OES. Then both OCAS and OES are weighted in to give your final module result. In my module it was 50/50 OCAS and OES. I had 80 in my OCAS so I was fairly confident that, even though I knew the exam didn't go that well, I would get a good mark.
I got 64 OES.
Any normal person would say that if OCAS and OES are 50/50, then 80 + 64 = 144/2 = 72. Yay, I got a B.
No.
The OU have a grading system where both OCAS and OES need to score in the same region or they go on your lower score. So because I got a B for OCAS and a C for OES, my final grade is a C. Meaning all my hard work getting 80 throughout the year counts for NOTHING in the end.
Better yet! This module counts towards my degree classification. Because of how things have now worked out, unless I do ridiculously well in the rest of my modules (another 4 I think) I won't get a 2:1. If I don't get at least a 2:1 then I'm not eligible for BPS membership. If I can't be a member of the BPS then I can't practice as a psychologist. My career is over before it's even begun. Whoopee.
I called them and they confirmed that because I didn't score in the same region for both, the lower grade counts and my OCAS was a complete waste of time. There is nothing I can do.
I'm questioning whether all this is even worth it. Am I wasting my time just setting myself up to fail? If I don't get a 2:1 then it's all been a waste of time. Seven years down the drain. Maybe I should just quit now, get a record of the modules I completed, and do some HR courses through work so at least I have something I can use.
Completely upset by this. I fall apart in exam conditions so looks like the same thing will just keep happening.
