Grounding myself.

My counselor basically wants me to think more in the present rather than in the future and she gave me an exercise to do where I write down five things I can see, four things I can hear, three things I can touch, two things you can smell, and one thing I can taste. You may see more of these.
And, well, I'm triggered right now so I need the reminder.
I can see
I can hear
I can touch
I can smell
I can taste.
May do this again once in bed.
And, well, I'm triggered right now so I need the reminder.
I can see
- My keyboard. Some of the keys are wearing of. The L key is almost completely worn off, the H, D, M, N, and C keys are starting to. It lies flat because I hate when I put that little staned up. And there's dust on it and dried-on food or something.
- My fake nails that are surprisingly still on after a month. French tips, the top being white and then there is a little purple design on them and all of them are still on.
- My Willow Tree Angels. I have so many of them, I really need to collect more of them but my dad hasn't visited the hospital with me lately.
- My snowglobes. Christmas ones, state ones, one teddy bear one I got when I was little.
- The glow in the dark stars on my ceiling. They don't glow in the dark anymore because they have been up there for years, and now they are also covered in dust because I haven't bothered to dust my ceiling, but I still like having them there.
I can hear
- The rain is pounding against my closed windows. It must be raining pretty hard outside because I can also hear it on the streets below, and the occasional car driving through it.
- The sound of my ceiling fan. It makes a little noise, maybe a clicking noise but I don't really know how to describe it well. For a while when I first moved into this bedroom I thought the fan was going to fall down or something, but no, it's normal.
- I can hear my computer making noises, which I guess is a good thing because that must mean it's functioning.
- There's a car going by. I can hear its engine or something.
I can touch
- The wood of my desk. I think my dad built this desk but I'm not sure. It gives me little slivers sometimes but I like the texture of the wood.
- My pjama pants. They're soft and comfortable but a bit too long on me.
- I have one of those ball things that you can squeeze and a bubble or whatever forms. I can't describe it very well but it's cold and rubbery. And the tag's still on it so I feel the hard tag as well.
I can smell
- My body spray. Luv's Berry Sweet. I never wear it but I still keep it around for the times that I do. I sprayed a bit of it into the air.
- Earlier I could smell my sister cooking chicken and it smelled really good. Now all I smell is air.
I can taste.
- Um, a combination of Listerine and strawberry ChapStick.
May do this again once in bed.

Ah, this is actually a pretty good idea! I might try this myself sometime. Thanks for indirectly suggesting it to me.
