Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 03:03 PM

Hey,

I was wondering how other girls/women weather the difficulties/pain surrounding your menstrual cycles?

Personally, I've had a very tough time with periods since my early teenage years, and was recently diagnosed with POS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).

I've also tried the pill to help, which gave me periods every 2 weeks which I didn't want to deal with, and been put Mephenamic Acid initially, to lighten them, but was allergic so switched to Tranexamic Acid, which helped quite a bit, but need to use it more often! Been on one called No-Spa, too (Foreign name, perhaps).

Generally need max strength Ibuprofen (400mg x 3 during the day), Codipar or Co-Dydramol to weather to abdominal/ovarian pain/headaches/backaches/thighaches etc!

PMS and period-related mood swings are also crap!

Anyone else?

Please share your experiences

Michy. x

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 03:18 PM

I used to have extremely bad period pains. I'd literally be doubled over and not able to walk/move at all. Nothing would help them either.
But as the years have gone by (I started when I was 10), they've gotten easier to deal with and even more so since i've been on the pill. Its a small ache, but it will go away if I take ibuprofen.

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 03:21 PM

I was on the pill when much younger for it, but it made me have periods every 2 weeks, so I stopped. I've been looking into alternate methods of contraception that help with periods, too, and also been on things like Tranexamic Acid to lessen the heaviness.

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 05:20 PM

I get really bad period pains. My mum freaked once because of how bad they are and I ended up at the hospital, this was when I was younger. -_- Now I'm on birth control and taking painkillers. It's not unbearable, but it's a pain in the ass. Literally.

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 06:24 PM

Hey there,

Although I do not have that syndrome that you have, I do have quite bad PMS pain, which I was pretty much diagnosed with PMDD because of my sort of kind of really bad mood swings during that time of month. Are you on birth control? My doctor put me on that to manage my pain and mood swings better, and I will actually be switching to birth control to only make me have four periods a year, which will help A LOT. I'm not sure you can or if that would help you, but getting lighter periods because of the period along with having less a year might be really helpful for cutting down on the pain.

It feels like there is a demon in my stomach tearing apart my insides. It hurts so bad I can barely move. The ONLY thing that can keep it at bay for even a few hours is 2 maximum strength extended relief midol and some advil, and it takes forever to kick in. I hate it so much.

I've never really had any major cramps. I think I get smaller ones right before my period starts, but they're bearable.

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 07:40 PM

I'm on my period right now (near the end now, thankfully!)- For awhile I had like, really, really bad pains- which is understandable because I haven't had my period recently- but I could deal with it, but I took advil so that I could be comfortable.

I used to get really bad pains, and also back ache, weak legs and sickness feelings too >_< But i've been on the contraceptive patch for the last couple of months and it's helped hugely

Re: Period Pain - May 11th 2012, 08:30 PM

I used to get horrible cramps and pains to the point where I had to stay home from school because I couldn't move. My doctor put me on this med that im supposed to take within a week of my period and during it. So far it seems to help and I barely notice it.

I pray to God that he kills me for the first day of my period. I hate it!!!!

Mine are over-cramps, and lead me to be out of school for the first day, I am on it... I'm not on any birth-control as I see no reason to it and for the fact of its only for my first day. Then the rest is smooth sailing.

I not only cramp during, but for about five days before, too. It's definitely no picnic. The real reason for the cramping, though, is the IUD I have. However, it's honestly worth the cramping.

Re: Period Pain - May 12th 2012, 12:12 AM

for me, it only happens once or twice a year. I get cramps that are bad enough to actually makes me sick or nauseous. Since I am vegan, I found that it was probably due to the large amount of soy I was eating one month- which has phytoestrogen, possibly raising my estrogen levels and creating a hormonal imbalance is generally what causes the massive amounts of pain I feel- for me at least.

Re: Period Pain - May 13th 2012, 11:53 AM

I used to have really bad periods. I'd bleed through a super plus tampon in like 2 hours. I also would pass out from pain and loss if blood. So my doctor put me on the pill. I still have really bad cramps but not so bad that I pass out and I can proudly wear regular tampons. I also have less mood swings and my acne has decreased dramatically. I'm very happy with the results although periods are still really painful for me. At least I'm sort of functional on them.

Re: Period Pain - May 13th 2012, 12:46 PM

I sometimes get cramps, but the worst thing is always the back pain. I usually take paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, and take a hot water bottle to bed. My ex used to give me back massages which really helped, but only for about half an hour. Then the pain would return.

I only get cramps on the first day, really. They're pretty bad (sometimes I can barely move), but the second day they've decreased dramatically and by the third day I'm pretty much fine.

Cramps cramps cramps and more cramps, but only for the first few days before and during. I randomly wake up in the middle of the night with really bad leg cramps and I'm not sure why.

Generally though, you'll find me tucked up on the sofa with a hot water bottle, good book in hand, since it makes me feel weak and tired.

I had MAJOR mood swings and cramping. Now I'm on birth control and I rarely ever get period cramps and the mood swings have at least somewhat improved.
