How to make your own fire starters

Whether it is getting warmer or cooler, the weather is making a switch for a lot of people in different parts of the world. Some people like to enjoy time with family and friends by having a campfire, but they can be difficult to start sometimes! Read on to learn how to make your own fire starters.
  • Gather your materials. You're going to need wax (from candles or wax melts), toilet paper or paper towel rolls, and dryer lint. Note: you might have to collect dryer lint for a bit of time before you are able to create your fire starters to make sure you have enough.
  • Prepare your cardboard rolls. If your rolls are too long, try cutting them in half. Next, slip dryer lint inside the roll. It should be mostly filled, but not completely.
  • Light your candles or plug in your wax melts. If you are using candles, be sure to melt enough of the candle; you want to have a decent sized wax puddle. If you're using wax melts, melt the entire piece of wax.
  • Complete your fire starters. When the wax is melted, pour it on the inside of the cardboard roll and let it solidify. Watch your fingers! Melted wax can be messy, so it may help to stand over a sink.
  • Give it a try! Next time you or someone you know is in the mood for a small campfire, use one of your fire starters to give the fire a nudge in the right direction.

Preparing for summer classes

The United States is one of the areas heading toward summer days. While K-12 and some college students are taking a break from school, some college students take summer courses to keep busy or earn their degree faster. Here are some ways to prepare for summer courses.
  • Allow some time for self-care and other activities. Summer classes are often condensed, which means more material will be covered and tested on in a shorter amount of time. Students will spend a lot of time studying, so it helps to try self-care and other fun activities before the semester begins if the time is available.
  • Create a balance between studying, other commitments, and free time. As mentioned above, summer courses tend to be stressful because they are shorter. Studying on top of other commitments can be very overwhelming and overbearing at times. Find time for yourself throughout the semester; pencil in the self-care if you need to.
  • Look at payment options early. Summer classes can be harder to pay for, especially if students do not have assistance or grants for the summer months. Try going online (or visiting your school) to set up an installment payment plan. The earlier you set it up, the smaller your down payment and other payments will be.
  • Use your resources. Resources should be used during any semester, but taking advantage of them is especially important during the summer. Use your textbook, handouts, notes, videos, or any PowerPoints your instructor provides. If you are unsure whether or not you will need to purchase or rent a textbook, contact your instructor (if they have been assigned early).
  • Get and keep yourself organized. Organization, from having a schedule to knowing where your papers are, is crucial when classes are so short. Keep a designated area to study and try other organization strategies such as using an academic planner (you can link your social and school calendar), trying color coding for each class, or taking notes in colorful pens to keep yourself engaged in the material.

Strawberry lemon punch

For a lot of people summer is upon us and that can mean a lot of gatherings with family and friends. This recipe is quick and easy to make and would be a great one to try for your next gathering.
  • Gather your ingredients. This recipe calls for 1 can of frozen pink lemonade concentrate, 1 pint of fresh strawberries, 6 1/4 a cup of cold water, and 1 quart of ginger ale.
  • Process the ingredients. You will need to process the lemonade concentrate, the strawberries and one cup of water in a food processor.
  • Combine remaining ingredients. Pour the punch mixture into a punch bowl. Stir in the remaining water and gradually add the ginger ale. If you like, you can garnish with fresh strawberries.
